Opening Discussion

  • What is something that has shaped your spiritual walk with Jesus?

Read and Discuss

Matthew 22:35-39

35 And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question to test him: 36 “Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?”

37 He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and most important command. 39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.”

  • How did Jesus live His life based around these two commands?
  • When Jesus is talking about the heart, what is He referring to?
    • How do you love God in that manner?
  • What does it look like to love something with your soul?
  • How can you love God with all of your soul?
  • What are some things you regularly put in your mind?
  • What are some ways you can love God with your mind?
  • How can you love your neighbor as yourself?
  • Why is it important that we love ourselves?

Matthew 6:5-8

5 “Whenever you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your private room, shut your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 When you pray, don’t babble like the Gentiles, since they imagine they’ll be heard for their many words. 8 Don’t be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him.

  • Why is prayer so important to Jesus?
  • How were the hypocrites using prayer as a way to show superiority?
  • What is at the heart of prayer?
  • If God knows what we need before we ask, why do we need to pray?
  • What are some ways you can pray in secret this week?

Discipleship Questions

  • Who is someone in need you could show love to this week by helping them out?
  • What can you do to grow closer to God in prayer this week?
  • What is one thing you can do to model your life like Jesus’?

Memorize it!

Matthew 22:37 He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and most important command. 39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.

Prayer TACOS

Thanksgiving: What are some things about the way Jesus lived His life that you are thankful for? Thank Him for the example He set while on earth.

Amazement: Jesus lived on this earth without sin. He led a life worthy of our worship. Worship the Lord for His time spent on this earth.

Confession: How have you neglected prayer and love towards the Lord? Confess those things and ask Him to forgive you.

Others: Who is a neighbor (someone you know) that may be struggling? Who is a neighbor you struggle to show love to? Pray and ask the Lord for opportunities to show His love to Him this week.

Self: Love your neighbor as yourself. What can you do to this week to show love to yourself in the manner that God loves you? Ask the Lord to help you to see yourself as He sees you.
