Read and Discuss

Matthew 11:11,16-19

11 “Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has appeared, but the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

16 “To what should I compare this generation? It’s like children sitting in the marketplaces who call out to other children: 17 We played the flute for you, but you didn’t dance; we sang a lament, but you didn’t mourn! 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

  • What do these verses tell us about people and their judgements?
  • What does Jesus say about people’s opinions of the work God has called you to do?
  • When someone is criticising you, how do you respond?
  • What is hard about receiving feedback from someone?
  • How do you know if someone’s feedback is from the Lord, or just their own opinion?
  • Have there been times where you have judged someone claiming to do the Lord’s work?
    • How do you know if they are doing what they are called to do by God?

Colossians 3:17, 23

17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

23 Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people…

  • What is Paul wanting the Colossians to remember about the way they live their lives?
  • How do these verses apply to us today?
  • What are some mundane things you have to do?
    • How can applying these verses change your outlook on those things?

Matthew 16:24-26

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it. 26 For what will it benefit someone if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will anyone give in exchange for his life?

  • How does this teaching of Jesus contradict what the world says about a good life?
  • When the disciples heard the phrase “take up his cross”, what would they have thought of?
  • What does it look like for you to deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus?
  • How does your everyday life reflect these verses in a positive way?
    • What are some areas you can improve on?

Discipleship Questions

  • What is one way you can listen to what God is calling you to do versus what the world tells you that you should do?
  • What is one task you can do this week with the mindset “I’m doing this in the name of Jesus?”
  • What is one way you can deny yourself this week?

Memorize it!

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me

Prayer TACOS

Thanksgiving: What are some ways people around you have strengthened your faith by the gifts God has given them? Thank the Lord for the gifts and talents He has given you and others to glorify Him and make Himself known to others.

Amazement: Think about how many people have lived and are currently living on this planet. God has uniquely gifted everyone of them (and you!) and has a plan for their life. Spend some time in worship of how awesome God is!

Confession: How have you followed your own path this week instead of the Lord’s plan and purpose for you? Confess that to Him now and ask Him for guidance each day on how to stay on the right path.

Others: How have someone else’s gifts and talents helped you grow close to the Lord? Pray for them to remain humble as they share those gifts with others. Pray that the Lord would continue to expand their influence for His kingdom. Take time this week to thank them and let them know the impact they have had on your faith.

Self: What has the Lord gifted you to do? Ask Him to help you use those things for Him and to do what He has called you to do, even if other people criticize you for it.
