Luke 22:39-46

39 He went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 When he reached the place, he told them, “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.”41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me—nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 44 Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. 45 When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t fall into temptation.”

  • Why did Jesus want His disciples to pray about not falling into temptation?
    • What was the temptation they were facing?
  • What temptations might Jesus have been feeling in that moment?
  • Why is prayer so important when we are tempted?
  • How does this passage reframe how most people view prayer?
  • What are some ways you can make prayer a vital part of your life instead of just something you do when you need something?

Luke 23:46

46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” Saying this, he breathed his last.

  • What does this verse show us about Jesus’ relationship with God the Father?
  • Why didn’t Jesus blame God for His circumstances?
  • What are some ways people blame God for bad things?
  • How can we trust God more with the bad things in life?
  • How did Jesus’ prayer on the Mount of Olives (the previous passage) help Him in this moment?

Mark 11:22-25

22 Jesus replied to them, “Have faith in God. 23 Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, everything you pray and ask for—believe that you have received it and it will be yours. 25 And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your wrongdoing.”

  • Jesus tells us to have bold prayers, but He prefaces all of it with “Have faith in God.” What does it look like to have faith in God?
  • Why is prayer more than just asking God for stuff you want?
  • What are some ways these verses could be taken out of context?
  • How can you make sure your prayers line up with what God wants for your life instead of just what you want?
