Opening Discussion

  • What do you want to do this year to grow in your relationship with Jesus?

Read and Discuss

Luke 5:15-16

15 But the news about Jesus spread even more, and large crowds would come together to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 Yet he often withdrew to deserted places and prayed.

Luke 6:12-13

12 During those days he went out to the mountain to pray and spent all night in prayer to God. 13 When daylight came, he summoned his disciples, and he chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles.

  • Why would Jesus go off by Himself to pray?
  • Jesus spent all night in prayer, then chose the twelve apostles the next morning. When you have big decisions to make, why should you prioritize prayer?
  • What are some ways you get alone to pray?
    • If you don’t do this regularly, where could you go to get away from the busyness of life to pray?

Luke 9:18-20

18 While he was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”

19 They answered, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back.”

20 “But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”

  • Why was prayer an important part of this conversation?

John 17:6-11

6 “I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from the world. They were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, 8 because I have given them the words you gave me. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you. They have believed that you sent me.

9 “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me, because they are yours.10 Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one.

Prayer TACOS

Thanksgiving: How has the Lord taught you how to pray? Thank Him for teaching you.

Amazement: Jesus prayed for you. Think about that and spend some time worshipping Him for loving you so much.

Confession: When was a time you relied on yourself to get something done instead of praying about it first? Ask for forgiveness and for the Lord to remind you to always seek Him first.

Others: Who came to mind when you were thinking about someone you need to have a tough conversation with? Pray for that conversation and ask the Lord for boldness and wisdom to have that conversation.

Self: What is something happening in your life that you should be praying about more? Pray about that now and ask the Lord for clear direction.
