Opening Discussion

  • Who made you feel valuable this week? What did they do that made you feel that way?

Read and Discuss

Galatians 5:7-12

7 You were running well. Who prevented you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough. 10 I myself am persuaded in the Lord you will not accept any other view. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty. 11 Now brothers and sisters, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. 12 I wish those who are disturbing you might also let themselves be mutilated!

  • Paul loves his rhetorical questions. What is he trying to get the Galatians to realize with this question in verse 7?
  • What does Paul mean by “a little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough?”
    • How have you seen this in your own life or in the lives of others?
  • Verse 12 contains a harsh hyperbole! Why is Paul so upset by these men preaching circumcision?
  • What would be a similar wrong teaching in the modern church?
  • If the Galatians were living in freedom, why would this teaching have persuaded them to step away from that freedom?
  • Has there been a time where a teaching persuaded you or someone you knew to step away from the freedom you have in Christ?

Galatians 5:13-14

13 For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love. 14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one statement: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

  • What are some ways people use their freedom to satisfy their own desires?
  • Why does Paul say freedom is found in serving others through love?
  • How have you ever experienced freedom through serving?
  • Why is the law fulfilled in the statement: “Love your neighbor as yourself?”
  • What is difficult about loving others?
  • Why don’t people usually associate serving and freedom?

Discipleship Questions

  • What is a specific way you can serve someone this week?
  • How have you pursued your own desires this week?
    • What do you need to do to pursue the freedom Christ gives?
  • Is there anyone you know being led astray by wrong teaching? How can you help them this week?

Memorize it!

Galatians 5:13 For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.

Prayer TACOS!

Adoration- Worship the Lord for the freedom found in Him.

Confess- How have you lived for yourself and your own desires this week? Confess those things and ask the Lord to forgive you.

Others- What would it look like to serve someone this week? Who is the Lord calling you to serve in love this week? Ask Him for opportunities to serve others this week.

Self- Ask the Lord to help you discern any false teaching that may be making its way into your life. Pray that He would give you wisdom to see things that are taking you away from the Truth of His gospel.
