Opening Discussion

  • What is something you do with others or on your own to help keep the Christmas season focused on Jesus?

Read and Discuss

Luke 2:4-7

4 Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family line of David, 5 to be registered along with Mary, who was engaged to him and was pregnant. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 Then she gave birth to her firstborn son, and she wrapped him tightly in cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

  • How do you think Mary and Joseph felt making this journey?
  • How did these events go against what Mary and Joseph may have expected for their life and first baby?
  • What are some ways this story relates to you?
  • What were some expectations you had for your life that didn’t go the way you thought?
    • How did the Lord use those things to draw you closer to Him?

Luke 2:8-11

8 In the same region, shepherds were staying out in the fields and keeping watch at night over their flock. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for look, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people: 11 Today in the city of David a Savior was born for you, who is the Messiah, the Lord.

  • Why were the shepherds terrified?
  • Why did the Lord choose the shepherds first to hear the good news of Jesus?
  • In what ways is the message of Jesus for everyone?
  • Who do you have trouble sharing the message of Jesus with?
    • What can you do this week to talk to them about what it means to follow Jesus?

Luke 2:12-18

12 This will be the sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped tightly in cloth and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:

14  Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors!

15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

16 They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the manger. 17 After seeing them, they reported the message they were told about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

  • How is the message the heavenly hosts still relevant to us today?
  • What does peace on earth look like practically?
  • How can you show the peace of Jesus to others this week?
  • How is the peace of Jesus different from the world’s version of peace?
  • What did the shepherds do when they heard the good news of Jesus?
  • Are we more reluctant or more eager to share the gospel with others?
  • What are some ways you can share the good news of Jesus with others?

Discipleship Questions

  • What is one way you can practice the peace of Christ in your life today?
  • What are two ways that you can share Jesus with someone this week?
  • What is the Lord teaching you?

Memorize it!

Luke 2:14

14  Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors!

Prayer TACOS

Thanksgiving: How has God exceeded your expectations recently? Thank Him for that.

Amazement: How does the Lord provide peace in all circumstances? Worship Him for His peace.

Confession: How have you allowed your relationship with Jesus to be second place (or lower!) to other things in your life? Confess that to Him and ask Him to help you always put Him first.

Others: Who is someone struggling this season? Ask the Lord to help them, but also to use you to point them to Him.

Self: What areas of your life are you lacking peace in? Pray that the Lord would show you how to walk in His peace, even in tough circumstances.
