Opening Discussion

  • When have you seen God answer prayer?

Read and Discuss

1 Timothy 2:1-4

1 First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2 for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 3 This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

  • Why does Paul tell Timothy to pray for ALL of those who are in authority when many of those people in authority were persecuting Christians?
  • Who are some people in authority who may seem hard to pray for? (Political figures, boss/manager, teacher, etc)
    • How can you pray for them in a positive way this week?
  • Verse 3 & 4 say God wants everyone to be saved and know the truth. Do you feel the same?
    • Why might someone not want another person saved?
  • Think about some of the people in your life that are difficult people, or people that you may disagree with that are politicians or rulers in other countries. Do you genuinely want them to be saved?
    • What would it take for you to get to a place of prayer and forgiveness for those people?

Psalm 141:2

May my prayer be set before you like incense;  may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening

sacrifice.

Revelation 5:7-8

7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had

taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one

had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s

people.

  • Incense was a pleasing aroma used in worship in the Old Testament. Do you ever think of your prayers being a pleasing aroma to the Lord? Why or why not?
  • David talks about lifting his hands during prayer. John says the elders and heavenly creatures fell down before the Lamb. How could lifting hands, kneeling, or changing your posture in some way help your prayer life?
  • What needs to change this week so you can spend more focused time praying?
    • When will you do this?

Discipleship Questions

  • How can you pray for those this week who may be your enemies?
  • What is something you can do this week to make prayer a priority?
  • What different posture (raising hands, kneeling, etc.) could you do this week during your prayer time to help you focus more on God?

Memorize it!

Psalm 141:2

May my prayer be set before you like incense;  may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening

sacrifice.

Prayer TACOS

Thanksgiving: Think about all the prayers you’ve ever prayed. Thank the Lord for taking them seriously and listening to everyone of them.

Amazement: Spend some time worshipping God for being the Creator of all things. Talk to Him about the amazing things He has made. Then worship Him for listening to you when you pray.

Confession: How have you treated prayer as a time to just ask for things you want or need and not to develop a real relationship with Jesus. Confess those things and ask for forgiveness.

Others: Who is someone you need to pray for this week? Think of those difficult people in your life. Pray for the Lord to bless them this week.

Self: What is the Lord doing in your life? Ask Him to help you start praying more regularly and spontaneously. Ask Him to show you how He is working daily in your life.
