Read and Discuss

Galatians 5:19-21

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  • Paul lists fifteen things that he considers obvious works of the flesh. Amongst that list is hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, and envy. How do these things hurt and hinder community?
    • How have you seen these things disrupt churches or your own Christian community?
  • Why do people sometimes leave the church when they’ve been hurt by the people in it, instead of working through it?
  • Is there any hurt or bitterness towards other Christians you need to work through?
    • How can you start that healing process this week?

Acts 15:36-41

36 After some time had passed, Paul said to Barnabas, “Let’s go back and visit the brothers and sisters in every town where we have preached the word of the Lord and see how they’re doing.” 37 Barnabas wanted to take along John who was called Mark. 38 But Paul insisted that they should not take along this man who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone on with them to the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed off to Cyprus. 40 But Paul chose Silas and departed, after being commended by the brothers and sisters to the grace of the Lord. 41 He traveled through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

  • How had Paul experienced hurt and dissension in his own life?
  • Why was Paul so upset with Mark?
  • How did the Lord use this dispute to reach even more people for the Kingdom of God?
  • What are some ways that God used disputes with others to strengthen His Kingdom and your faith?

Galatians 5:22-26

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

  • How can the fruit of the Spirit help us when we are having problems with other people?
  • What does it look like to keep in step with the Spirit when it comes to anger and frustration with other people?
  • What are some ways envy and jealousy play into our hurt towards others?

  • Is there any anger that you have towards God based on how someone (or a group) treated you in the church?
